Dual Alliance

Dual Alliance
Anxious about the possibility of being caught between France and Russia in future military conflicts, Otto von Bismarck, chancellor of the new German Empire after 1871, began cultivating cordial relations with the Habsburg Empire soon after defeating its army during the Seven Weeks’ War in 1866. Signed in 1879, the Dual Alliance committed each participant to defense of the other should Russia attack either party in the east. Should another, unspecified, state attack either Germany or Austria–Hungary, neither of the latter would help the aggressor. Were Russia to aid whoever opened the offensive, however, Germany and Austria–Hungary would come to one another’s aid. The alliance was renewable five years at a time. Should neither signatory request a review of its terms, the agreement would run for an additional 36 months. The terms of the Dual Alliance were not fully disclosed until 1888.
